Restrooms & Toilets
in China
Where to find public restrooms, what signs to recognize, and what to prepare before you go.
Quick answer
BYO tissue
This is one of the most useful daily-life habits for travel in China.
Public restrooms are easy to find, but toilet paper and soap are not always provided. Always carry a small packet of tissues and hand sanitizer when you go out.
What to expect
Recognize common signs and understand the difference between squat and seated toilets.

Public toilet sign
Look for this universal public toilet sign.

Male and female signs
男 means male. 女 means female.

Seated vs. squat toilet signs
Some places show signs for seated and squat toilets.
Squat vs. seated toilets
Squat toilets are still common in public places such as parks, older buildings, metro stations, and some tourist areas. Western-style seated toilets are more common in high-end malls, hotels, airports, and international chains.
Where to find restrooms
Large public buildings and transport hubs are usually the most reliable options.
McDonald's & KFC
Often the easiest option in cities. Not every location has toilets, but many do.
Shopping malls
Common and usually cleaner. Restrooms are often upstairs or downstairs, not always on the ground floor.
Metro stations
Many stations have toilets, but you may need to go through security or enter the paid area.
High-speed rail stations & airports
Usually easier to find, well marked, and better maintained than many street facilities.
Parks & tourist attractions
Public toilets are usually marked clearly, but quality can vary by location and crowd level.
Hotels and large malls
Best choice if you prefer Western-style seated toilets or cleaner facilities.
How to use a squat toilet
Squat toilets are simple once you know the basic steps.
Position yourself correctly
- Face the door, not the flushing pipe.
- Place your feet on the textured foot pads.
- Squat fully and keep your balance centered.
Keep your balance
- Keep your heels flat if possible.
- Do not sit on the edges.
- Keep clothing, bags, and phone away from the floor.
Flush carefully
- Look for a wall button, foot pedal, or side lever.
- Some older facilities may have automatic or delayed flushing.
- Step back before flushing if needed.
Handle hygiene
- Toilet paper may not be provided, so carry tissues.
- Some toilets have bins for paper. Follow local signs if paper should not be flushed.
- Use hand sanitizer if soap is unavailable.
Tip: If you prefer a Western-style toilet, go to large malls, hotels, airports, or international chains.
