How to order food in China

How to Order Food
in China

A simple guide to help you order food in Chinese restaurants with confidence.

Before you order

Ordering methods vary by restaurant and city. Many places use QR-code menus, but paper menus, picture menus, and staff ordering are still common. If you need help, ask staff or use a translation app.

1. When there is no English menu

  • Use translation apps or show written phrases.
  • Point to pictures or dish numbers on the menu.
  • Ask staff for recommendations if you are not sure.
  • Write down key words, such as “no spicy” or “no pork”.
  • Show the dish picture if needed.

Dish names may not show every ingredient

Chinese dish names do not always list all ingredients. If you avoid pork, beef, seafood, peanuts, coriander, or spicy food, confirm with staff before ordering.
